Teacher with 20 years experience in mainstream and special
education, junior and secondary, day and residential. From
1989 - 96, he was a Deputy head teacher of a residential school
Co-ed, 8 - 18 years of age, for children with social, emotional
and behavioural needs, some with complex medical issues that
required 24 hour nursing provision, maintained by a local
authority.
In January 1996, was awarded a Churchill Fellowship. He visited
45 schools / children's homes, from the Bronx, in New York,
down to Tampa, Florida. The objective was to observe, evaluate
and to return with good practice in the area of how adults
safely mange children's anger and aggression.
Developed a range of specific child / YP specific non-painful
techniques aimed at promoting and protecting positive relationships:
the Cradle Hold, the Wrap Hold, standing, sitting and ground;
the Half-Shield Separation technique, Single and Double-Elbow
holds into chairs with help protocol; Standing Single Elbow
to Dead Weight on the Ground.
These physical techniques were intergrated into a course
that emphasised defusion and de-escalation skills, as well
as, the importance of recording, reporting and reviewing ,
plus staff and children being able to repair their working
relationships following a crisis intervention and the need
for all to feel safe at work in order to teach, learn and
care effectively
Delivered courses in the management of children's challenging
behaviour in a variety of educational and care settings and
has spoken at a number conferences on the same subject.
